Television Terms - What's the Difference Between HD and Plasma Screens?

Television is now making huge changes. The most obvious change in recent years is the transition from analog to digital broadcasting. This transition means only changing the way television channels are distributed over terrestrial network. The old approach that worked for decades was using one analog transmitter to broadcast one TV channel using analog transmission technology. The new approach uses digital transmitters that broadcast a package of services (including many TV channels) called multiplex. The main reason for this change is efficient use of radio spectrum. This is a limited resource and therefore needs to be used efficiently. The other reason is implementation of new services and technologies that were not possible using analog broadcasting.

The first major difference is the picture resolution. The old analog TV is considered as a standard definition television (SDTV). This means that the picture has 480 lines (USA, Japan) or 625 lines (Europe and many other countries). Unfortunately only about 90% of those lines are visible on the screen. This low number of lines (and consequently low number of columns or pixels in each line) limits the resolution of the television picture. The latest trend is broadcasting high definition television (HDTV) picture which contains more lines and provides better picture with more details. HD television is only possible with digital broadcasting. This new technology together with more TV channels using the same frequency bandwidth is the biggest advantage of digital broadcasting.

HD means that the television picture contains 720 or more lines. The best HD picture contains 1080 lines and each line has 1920 pixels or points. This resolution is called Full HD. There are also other HD standards that have the number of lines between 720 and 1080. There are two variants of the HD picture: interlaced and progressive. Progressive mode means displaying HD images with all lines in each frame (static image that constitutes a moving picture). This way assures the best possible HD picture. The other alternative is interlaced mode which means alternatively displaying images with odd and even lines. This mode reduces needed bandwidth but also slightly reduces HD quality.

Whilst this is more than sufficient for small spaces, you might want to hook it up to some speakers if you are looking for a little extra audio power. This TV did a great job at playing HD videos and content. The visuals were sharp with decent black levels and color accuracy (especially for its size and price range). All in all, the Sharp LC19SB27UT has proven to a very versatile and competent mini HDTV. At the moment, it is retailing at just around 7 per unit!

We use out television for entertainment, that's what it was designed for. We suspend belief for an hour or so while we enjoy being entertained. Some believe, however, that TV rots the brain cells with all the violence etc. Some shows, however, still have morals and teach us lessons for life. These are the best of those.

I'm a great fan of Psych; one of the best shows on the US network. Shawn, the lead character, masquerades as a psychic to solve crimes. The thing is, he is just a guy who has a very sharp wit and a very useful photographic memory.

Everyone loves to play detective, and I am one while this show is on. It really gets you thinking and makes great TV.

Samsung LN40C630 LCD HD TV Review

I was recently looking for the best selling HD TV sets and was really surprised when my research led me to the Samsung LN40C630 LCD HD TV. Firstly I was surprised it was Samsung (big fan as I am) and secondly that it was a 40 Inch set and not something bigger. So, here am I, HD TV expert, and I am surprised at something like that!

I also thought it would be a LED or Plasma, but it was a mid-range LCD that came out on top. So, I had to find out more about this HD TV that everyone across America is buying!

As I was in Vancouver at the time, I went down to the local Future Shop to see what I could find out. Arriving early on a Monday morning hoping the sales staff would have nothing better to do and than give me a demo, the strategy proved good as I quickly found my new best friend Graham the TV salesman. To be fair, I did explain to him I had no intention of buying and would he mind, so a Starbucks Vanilla Latte later Graham was in full flow!

The first thing Graham told me is that Samsung have only just gone to market with the C Series LCD's. And, he was very quick to point out how much the price has fallen over previous models. release. My guess is that economies of scale have kicked in as far as LCD TV manufacture is concerned...that coupled with the obvious increase in demand and therefore numbers shipping and it's a classic price reduction situation. So, I guess we have just reached the point where people begin to feel it is a genuinely good buy to invest in HD TV.

That's fair enough, but I still think any HD TV needs to "wow" the potential buyer to make them part with their hard earner money, even more so in the current economic conditions.

The most important thing I wanted to know about was motion screen blur, a well known flaw in ealy LCD sets. Indeed it was why my first HD set was a Plasma (being a sport fanatic and all). Of course, the old Plasma (now my second set) is suffering the curse of the Plasma - screenburn. Tough choice in the "olden" days!

Anyway, back to the story, Graham explained that because Samsung have made the 630 series with 120 Hz screen refresh and given it full 1080p HD capability that issue has been solved. The 80,000:1 screen contrast also helps keep the picture clean and crisp, even when the action reaches breakneck speed.

I guess with watching sport being a high priority TV pastime for many millions of Americans overcoming this problem at the now lower price means the price objection barrier has been smashed which is why the Samsung LN40C630 is now proving so hugely popular and we are seeing huge sales numbers.

Certainly I love all sports and this was a major issue for me. But what I saw from the LN40C630 LCD TV really changed my view on LCDs.

So, we rigged up a true 1080p source and the picture is crystal clear. And, I am delighted to report completely free of motion blur. We watched a "morning after" replay of a Canucks game in full 1080 HD. Ice Hockey is probably the fastest sport available and the picture was stunning. The action was crisp and clear with the colors bright and vibrant and the blacks deep and dark.

Then we attached it to Blu Ray DVD player to see how the TV performed with HD DVD. Again the Samsung LN40C630 came up trumps. Brilliant, bright, solid colors with deep rich blacks showed off stunning contrasts and a picture that seemed like it was real life in bright sunshine.

Graham (we were now on first name terms) explained this was due to the full 1080p and that contrast ratio. He also told me that early LCDs were only at 10,000:1. Most HD TVs are around 70,000 - 100,000 ratio apparently, and this is what gives the latest sets such highly detailed and crystal clear pictures, no matter how fast and frenetic the action might get.

It's true better "definition" is available with a LED, but I am convinced (after watching) that this set is now so popular because it gives a truly stunning viewing experience at a VERY reasonable price. It's also pretty much "immediate" future proof with Graham reckoning it would be "good for at last 5-7 years". I think that's reasonable.

The Samsung UN40C630 also comes with reasonable jack pack (4 HDMI, 2 USB, PC Input), better is available, sure, but this is more than adequate for most other than the real geeks needs. Low energy consumption is another side benefit. It also uses Samsungs latest picture technology (wide color enhancer pro). This is designed to give better color luminance across the spectrum resulting in more brilliant colors. I can vouch for this! (Can you tell I borrowed some of the sales puff there!)

The one slight downside on the Samsung LN40C630 40 Inch Led TV is that the sound is not very good in all honesty. With just 2 x 10 watt speakers I guess it's not surprising. And whilst the brochure says "offers multi channel sound", well not really. But I think most people buying an HD TV will probably buy at least a basic cinema surround system so it's not really an issue in my opinion.

The bottom line? This is an outstanding HD TV set in terms of performance, functionality and more importantly price! If you haven't yet upgraded, this is the middle ground, safe option for your first foray into HD TV. Solid technology offering outstanding picture quality for any sort of viewing. Having seen a demo courtesy of Graham I can now clearly see why the Samsung LN40C630 LCD TV has become Americas most popular HD TV!

10 straightforward Steps for Fixing Your Cell Phone If It Gets Wet!

1. First - and most foremost - get it out of the water!

2. Also urgent - remove the battery. Prevent any interactions Fast!

3. remove your Sim card. All your vital facts is here. Even if you don't saving your phone, at least saving your Sim card. For now, just put it to one side to dry out naturally.

4. remove as much water as possible as swiftly as possible. Just use an absorbent material (toweling or paper tissues)

5. An alternate drying technique is to seal the phone (with everything removed) in a plastic bag with a few of silica packs that you get with electronic goods etc. Leave the phone in the bag for a day or two, and it may be that the silica will discharge the moisture

6. Give time for the phone to dry. Don't experiment with putting the battery back on to see if it works as this would risk damaging the phone with a short circuit.

7. Be inpatient and wait. Yes - be patient! Let nature have its way; just leave it in a warm place and let the water evaporate.

8. Try replacing the battery if all else fails. They are not high-priced and it may solve the problem

9. See if there is a loan phone available. That will also make the waiting process easier.

10. Test it out. After being inpatient for 3 days, make sure everything is clean and dry and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work, wait another few days. If it still won't work, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it.

Other ideas

* Place it on top of the vent of a cable box, monitor or Tv for at least 24 hours (up to 3 days). The low heat emitted is enough to gradually dry out the phone.

* If your phone falls in to salt water (like the ocean for instance), remove the battery and rinse with fresh water before crystals can form.

* consider soaking your phone in distilled water to wash away any minerals it picked up from the former water.

Be careful

* Do not under any circumstances heat the battery - it could leak or explode. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive. If you use an oven or hairdryer, remove the battery first.

* If you use alcohol for the drying process, only do so to the outside, and do not apply heat in any way shape or form, not even the gentlest of heat. Do not join together the battery until the alcohol smell goes away

* And, if it's not stating the obvious, do not put the phone into the microwave. You will fry the components and probably ruin the microwave!
